Knowing What It’s Like to Have a Disability and Parent a Child With a Disability

Tim’s Unique Perspective

In 2012 Tim Moran became the CEO of MyCIL (Northeast PA Center for Independent Living). Previously, he was on our Board of Directors, serving as its president for two years.

Tim brought his broad business experience to MyCIL. Prior to joining our team, he was the Business Development Manager of the world’s largest prosthetics and orthotic company.

But, more importantly, he brought his unique perspective as a person with a disability and a parent of a child with a disability.

Tim and his wife Lisa have nine children, ranging from college to preschool age. His youngest Matthew was born in 2014.

Matthew has a congenital heart defect and Down Syndrome. While he is healthy and happy now, the road to get here had its challenges. Tim can empathize with parents of children who have disabilities because he is one.

Tim knows firsthand what it’s like. Whether you’re someone who has a disability or have a loved one with a disability, he can relate.

Helping People With Disabilities

Tim’s Passion

Tim has made it his life’s work to help people with disabilities live their best lives. In fact, he is one of only eight who was appointed to the National Advocacy Board of Directors for Amputee Coalition of America.

The Amputee Coalition of America, based in Virginia, reaches out to people across the country with limb loss, empowering them through education, advocacy and support. Founded in 1989, the Amputee Coalition is the leading organization on limb loss in the United States. Their dedication to amputees and their families have helped improve quality of life while ensuring their voices are heard.

In addition to the Amputee Coalition of America, Tim was a member of the Amputee Empowerment Partners — serving as the Commonwealth’s coordinator for the newly disabled — and has served on the board of the Deustch Institute, chairing many of their events. A Scranton, PA-based organization, the Deustch Institute is devoted to creating recreational opportunities for people with disabilities. Since 1979, they have been improving the health and well-being of people with disabilities in northeastern Pennsylvania.

In his newest appointment, Tim serves as a member of the Governor’s Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities. This committee advises the Governor’s Cabinet for People with Disabilities, which is responsible for making recommendations to the Governor on disability issues.

Appointed by Governor Tom Wolf, Tim shares his perspective, thoughts and experience on all matters related to having a disability and being a parent of a child with a disability. From pre-employment skills to transportation, Tim continues to improve the lives of people with disabilities by shedding light on challenges and proposing viable solutions to overcome them.

Tim’s Role as CEO of MyCIL

As the CEO of MyCIL, Tim aligns our resources with our mission of helping people live independently. He’s committed to growing our programs, creating new ones and meeting our client’s needs at every step. A key part of his role is obtaining funds, grants and revenue streams so we can continue serving our clients and the community.

He works directly with our team to ensure we’re making the greatest positive impact on the lives of people with disabilities. As our organization’s leader, he fosters a positive work environment and lights our passion for helping others.

Constantly looking to the future, he seeks out new opportunities for MyCIL to shape the community we live in. Reaching out to politicians, community leaders, advocates and clients, he develops plans for improving how people with disabilities live in our community.

Tim’s Important Message to You

In His Own Words

MyCIL is more than a job — it’s my life. As a person with a disability, I have chosen to rise above my disability to live a full and uncompromising life. The goal of MyCIL is to help others live independently in much the same way. I say “we can be independent when we do it together” because everyone can benefit from a helping hand.

Together with my wife Lisa, we are raising nine children. Our youngest, Matthew, was born with both Down Syndrome and a congenital heart defect. Our journey as parents has been challenging, but today, Matthew is healthy and happy.

With our help, he will grow to live a fulfilling life. I would be happy to answer your questions, help you with your concerns and offer our expertise in the field of independent living.

To us, living independently means living your best life, your way. You should decide how to live your life. You should decide what services and supports you need. And you should decide how best to use your funds. Just as anyone in the general population, you deserve to live an independent life, your way.

Independent living gives adults with disabilities and families of children with disabilities choice. This includes the choice of caregivers. It also includes choosing what services you want to use your resources on.

Having the choice of caregivers and control over your budget empowers you. In turn you will experience more freedom. The result is a better quality of life.

For each person, the definition of independent living is different. Our role is to help you achieve your unique definition of independent living. With MyCIL, you get a partner in independent living who tailors services to fit your needs, goals and challenges. Together, we can live independently.
