College Magazine ranked the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) number two on its top 10 list of best colleges for students with disabilities.

What It Takes to Get on the List of Best College Campus for Students With Physical Disabilities

The magazine judged schools on different criteria including accessibility and campus involvement. Those schools that made the list have accessible dorms, classrooms and transportation. In addition, their campus advocates as a whole for awareness and inclusion.

A Focus on Rehabilitation Through Sport

UIUC’s history of empowering students with disabilities is long. In fact, it led the country in rehabilitation through sport.

As a result, their efforts turned into a program of training elite adapted athletes, many of whom go on to the Paralympic Games. The university is also well-known for its men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball programs.

Accessibility and Accommodations

Another key reason why UIUC scored so highly on the list is its accessibility and accommodations. For example, the Nugent Hall dorm offers students daily room services, such as emptying trash cans, making beds and cleaning bathrooms. Aside from their housing, their buses take students directly to the airport, classes, medical appointments and more key places.

Fraternity of Rehabilitation Service

Another factor that helped UIUC make the list is Delta Sigma Omicron (DSO). This fraternity dedicated to rehabilitation education, research and service. In addition, the fraternity also helps students with disabilities to study abroad.
