Ms. Wheelchair America turns 50 this year! It will be held in Grand Rapids, MI from August 28 through September 3.

Unlike traditional beauty competitions, Ms. Wheelchair scores contestants on advocacy, communication, achievement, and presentation. The goal? Select the most articulate and accomplished spokeswoman for people with disabilities.

What Does Ms. Wheelchair America Do?

The main role of Ms. Wheelchair America is to advocate for the 64 million-plus Americans who have a disability. This includes educating the public about what having a disability can mean.

During her year-long reign, she will promote awareness. Mainly, she will educate the public on how important it is to remove architectural as well as attitudinal barriers. She will also highlight the achievements that Americans with disabilities have made and help establish programs in all 50 states.

To achieve these goals, she’ll meet with advocacy groups and make appearances on radio and TV.
