The Eagles have partnered with Popcorn for the People, a non-profit that creates job opportunities for neurodiverse people, to open a popcorn stand at Lincoln Financial Field. They are hiring adults with intellectual disabilities, such as autism, to cook, prepare, and then package the popcorn bags during games and other stadium events.
Popcorn for the People: Meaningful Employment Through Gourmet Popcorn
Popcorn for the People was founded in 2014 by Samuel Bier who, at the time, was struggling to gain meaningful employment. With the help of his parents, he created an organization to do just that — while helping others who had the same challenges.
Through gourmet popcorn, the organization is providing career opportunities with competitive wages to maximize the independence of people with intellectual disabilities and differences.
Why This Partnership Is Important
Research has revealed that at least 85% of adults with autism are unemployed yet have a college degree. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, this is the highest unemployment rate for any disability. Neurodiverse people face an uphill battle when it comes to securing employment.
With the Eagles partnering with Popcorn for the People, they are sending a clear message that neurodiversity does not mean the inability to perform a job well. In fact, people who are neurodivergent can bring a unique skill set to the workplace. The hope is other teams and corporations across the nation will follow in their footsteps.
How You Can Get Involved
